Cheltenham Fire Under Investigation

Fire officials from the Pennsylvania State Police, Montgomery County and Abington and Cheltenham townships were on the scene; no one was injuired

A U-Shaped building in the 8400 block of Limeklin Pike is still smoking following a late-night fire.

Cheltenham Fire Marshal Joe O’Neill said moments ago that units got a call for smoke in the area at about 11 p.m. last night.

The first alarm attempted to go inside the building, but it was quickly determined that the fire was throughout the structure.

“We backed out and used an exterior master stream,” O’Neill said. “It was determined pretty early that no one was going inside so we set up a collapse zone. Basically, the building was written off — there was no way to stop it.”

According to O’Neill, the building was vacant. Not too long ago it was used as an office building for the Wyngate Town Homes development, in which it sits. Prior to that, it was used as a country club banquet hall.

O’Neill said the building was maintained, and the Wyngate company was using the building for office storage.

Fire officials from the Pennsylvania State Police, Montgomery County and Abington and Cheltenham townships were on the scene.

O’Neill said the fire is under investigation. He added that the Pennsylvania State Police are “notified on every ignition.”

The fire took a little more than two hours to get under control, O’Neill said.

Abington Assistant Fire Marshal John Rohrer said all five Abington Fire Companies were on the scene.

O’Neill said Rockledge, Huntingdon Valley, Jenkintown and Springfield fire companies responded as well.
