Ambulance Crashes in Abington

The crash left many without power and still has Route 611 closed both ways.

A transport ambulance crashed into a utility pole on Route 611 in Abington late this afternoon.

The crash happened at about 3 p.m., northbound, near the corner of Maplewood Avenue, according to Abington Police Lt. Kelley Warner.

"The vehicle was driving northbound and flipped," Warner said. "It hit the pole and took out what seems to be every power line [on the street]."

According to Warner, the driver was transported to Abington Memorial Hospital with unknown injuries; the ambulance was not carrying patients.

A woman who works at nearby St. Anne's Episcopal Church said power started flickering, and came on and off, several times around 3 p.m.; she said the church currently has power.

"I thought, 'Why are we losing power?' I didn't see a storm or anything," she said.

PECO crews are on the scene, as are members of the Abington Public Works Department.

Traffic is closed both ways on Route 611 between Moreland and Old Welsh roads; it is particularly congested at the corner of 611 and Old Welsh Road.
