Abington Police Reports

A DUI and a couple of disorderly conducts

DUI … Austin Lawrence, 24, of Fayette Street, Philadelphia, was arrested Sept. 4 at 12:54 a.m. following a traffic stop for swerving and speeding near the area of Easton and Davisville roads, police said. According to police, there was a strong odor of marijuana emanating from Lawrence’s vehicle and Lawrence’s entire shirt and lap were covered in ash and marijuana remnants. Lawrence said he was smoking a blunt outside of his car right before he started driving.

Lawrence said, “Yeah, I don’t have anything on me.” Police found a small plastic container of marijuana in his front pants pocket and an empty sandwich bag containing marijuana remnants in his back left pocket. Lawrence’s eyes were extremely bloodshot and he was slurring his words.

Lawrence failed two field sobriety tests. A nurse at Holy Redeemer Hospital was unable to draw blood from Lawrence; she said she believed it to be from dehydration, as his veins were not taking the needle, police said. The criminal complaint was filed Dec. 16.

Drug possession … Christine V. Jabara, 23, of North Wissahickon Street, Ventnor, N.J., was arrested July 3 at 1:01 p.m. following a traffic stop for speeding near the corner of Moreland Road and Coolidge Avenue in which she was a passenger, police said. According to police, the vehicle smelled of burnt marijuana.

Jabara admitted to smoking marijuana and then handed police a bag containing 0.32 grams of marijuana as well as a warm, multi-colored glass pipe. The criminal complaint was filed Dec. 16.

PROHIBITION EQUATES TO MORE VIOLENT CRIME The University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada recently reviewed 15 studies that evaluated the association between violence and drug law enforcement. "Our findings suggest that increasing drug law enforcement is unlikely to reduce drug market violence. Instead, the existing evidence base suggests that gun violence and high homicide rates may be an inevitable consequence of drug prohibition and that disrupting drug markets can paradoxically increase violence." http://tinyurl.com/c4uyecn
