Abington Man Lands Fifth DUI Arrest

The man, from Huntingdon Valley, was also arrested on drug charges.

Abington Police arrested a Huntingdon Valley man on DUI and drug charges late last month following a traffic stop for allegedly driving recklessly on Susquehanna Road.

Anthony Robert Newett, 46, of Meadowbrook Drive, Huntingdon Valley, was arrested Nov. 29 shortly after 5:30 p.m. after police said he entered the wrong lanes of travel, forcing other drivers to swerve out of the way, while driving a red Jeep westbound on Susquehanna Road.

This is the fifth DUI arrest for Newett, according to court documents; he was also arrested in February and June of this year and twice in September 2007.

As the Jeep was pulling over, its right tires struck the curb and left the roadway, and finally came to a stop within inches of a parked vehicle, police said.

Newett was "semi-responsive" and his speech was slurred, police said. Newett failed field sobriety tests and was taken into custody.

Newett had seven blue clear plastic bags of suspected heroin stamped "Jackpot" in his possession, as well as a used syringe containing suspected heroin residue, police said.

He is scheduled to be formally arraigned Jan. 29.
