Amar Bose, Abington Alum Who Pioneered Speaker Technology, Dies At 83

Amar Bose was a member of the Class of 1947.

Amar Gopal Bose, whose name graces speakers all over the world, in cars and in houses, died over the weekend. He was 83.

Bose, a pioneer in the world of electronics and speaker technology, grew up in the Hollywood section of the township, and was inducted into the Abington High School Hall of Fame in 1988 after receiving the Inventor of the Year award in 1987.

According to the Bose website, Bose founded his company in 1964 and introduced its 901 Direct/Reflecting speakers in 1968. Click here to see a list of Bose Corporation milestones.

Bose received his bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate — all in electrical engineering — from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He was also a professor at MIT. According to the school’s website, Bose donated the majority of the stock in his corporation to the school in 2011.
