Bruno Wakes Up from Surgery

Bruno, the injured 3-year-old English setter who was found on Cedar Road in Abington after being hit by a car on Saturday, woke up from emergency surgery at about 7 p.m. Thursday at Veterinary Referral Center in Malvern.

Bruno suffered a large laceration on his right leg, two fractures of his pelvis, and a severely fractured right leg as a result of the run-in with the car. According to Russ Diamond, director of administration at Bucks County Emergency Vets, Dr. Franczuszki of VRC fixed both of Bruno’s hips and his leg.

Bruno is expected to make a full recovery and will likely be put up for adoption by Bucks County Emergency Vets after his rehabilitation, which will take several weeks.

He was taken to Rau Animal Hospital where one of its veterinarians, Dr. Mark Fox, then drove the dog to Bucks County Emergency Vets.

Someone claimed the dog, but Diamond said the owner had just recently adopted the dog, and was unable to pay for the surgery. The owner then signed the dog over to Bucks County Emergency Vets — the alternative would have been euthanizing the dog, Diamond said.

According to Diamond, Bucks County Emergency Vets then reached out to VRC in Malvern, where a board-certified surgeon agreed to take care of the dog at a discount.

The dog will spend about four to six weeks in recovery, but then will likely be put up for adoption.

“We’re going to help him get better through therapy,” Diamond said. “He’s a great looking dog. It’s hard to tell his personality right now, because he’s in so much pain, but he just looks like a wonderful dog that’s been through a lot.”
