Bruno Update: ‘His Walking Continues to Get Better’

The dog, which was hit by a car in Abington last month and received emergency surgery, will hopefully be put up for adoption soon.

Bruno, the 3-year-old English setter which suffered a large laceration to his leg, two fractures of his pelvis and a severely fractured leg, is walking and may be close to finding a permanent home.

“Every day seems to be better than the last,” Russ Diamond, director of administration at Bucks County VETS, said in an email Thursday. “His walking continues to get better … today was much better than yesterday. When we walk slowly, he uses all fours just about all the time. When he starts to get more playful and run around, it’s back to three, but we’re getting there.”

Bruno had surgery at Veterinary Referral Center in Malvern last month; he was then taken to Bucks County VETS — who now takes care of the dog — for rehabilitation. Following Bruno’s rehab stint, he’ll likely be placed up for adoption.

“I’m still not sure when he’ll be ready to go home, but we’re testing him tomorrow to see how he handles visits from people he doesn’t know,” Diamond said. “If he does OK (I think he will), we’ll try to arrange some visitations next week and if all goes well, start taking applications to find his forever home!”

Bruno was discovered Saturday, July 6 in Abington.

See the initial post here.

He was taken to Rau Animal Hospital where one of its veterinarians, Dr. Mark Fox, then drove the dog to Bucks County Emergency Vets.

Someone claimed the dog, but Diamond said the owner had just recently adopted the dog, and was unable to pay for the surgery. The owner then signed the dog over to Bucks County Vets — the alternative would have been euthanizing the dog, Diamond said.

According to Diamond, Bucks County Vets then reached out to VRC in Malvern, where a board-certified surgeon agreed to take care of the dog at a discount.

The dog will spend about four to six weeks in recovery, and then will likely be put up for adoption.

"We’re going to help him get better through therapy,” Diamond said. “He’s a great looking dog. It’s hard to tell his personality right now, because he’s in so much pain, but he just looks like a wonderful dog that’s been through a lot.”
