Reading and Literacy Skills Assessments for Children Ages 5-12

Is your child reading as well as his classmates?  Are you concerned that another year has gone by and your child is still not reading at grade level?

For the first time, Center School, an independent school for children with learning disabilities, is opening its doors to the public to offer individualized reading and literacy skill assessments for children between the ages of 5-12.  A limited number of screenings are being offered during the week of August 5-9, for a reduced rate of $50 per child.  Appointments will be made on a first come, first served basis.

For 25-years, Center School has successfully taught hundreds of children how to read.  With expertise in areas ranging from dyslexia and dysgraphia to ADHD, auditory processing disorder and executive function issues, the experts at Center School understand how important it is to identify and remediate learning difficulties as early as possible.

“Students who fail to read early rarely develop into great students in middle and high school. Children learn to read between kindergarten and third grade.  After third grade, children need to be able to read to learn,” said Allison Enslein, Center School’s Director.  “We see it time and again, parents hoping that ‘one more year’ of traditional reading instruction will make a difference.  But if children aren’t reading on grade level while in kindergarten, first, and second grades, they may never catch up.  And if reading disabilities aren’t caught early, a child may never be able to catch up.”

For some families, the realization that their bright child is not performing up to his or her potential is brought to their attention by a kindergarten or preschool teacher.  For others, it’s not until their child goes to middle school.

Individual appointments for 60-90 minute sessions, including testing and feedback, will be set up though the school.  Parents will have the opportunity to speak individually with experienced educators about their child’s specific reading profile including strengths, challenges and strategies for remediation where needed.

“My husband and I kept hoping that our son would mature and ‘catch up,” said one parent of a rising sixth grader at Center School.  “But it wasn’t until our son started sixth grade at Center School that we really saw he could easily make new friends and be in an environment that was conducive to the way he needed to learn.  The school changed his life and it changed our family, in that his new-found confidence is now evident in so many ways.”
