Update: Wawa Construction Could be Done by Summer

Crews are completing the 'groundwork' for the new Wawa.

Though the brutally cold weather and snow may have thrown a monkey wrench into construction plans, the soon-to-be constructed Wawa, at the corner of Old York and Baeder roads, will likely be finished by summer.

Abington Director of Planning and Code Enforcement Larry Matteo said that construction crews for developer Provco’s 4,700-square-foot Wawa with six fueling stations are in the process of working on the site’s sewer system; they will also be working on road, crosswalk and signal modifications in the near future, Matteo said.

Matteo said he did not know when in summer the project would be completed.

Many residents spoke out in opposition to the development of the vacant parcel. Their concerns were increased traffic and the fact that the Wawa will be a 24-hour establishment; other Abington residents said the blighted site was in need of development.

Abington Planning Commission approved the final land development plans in late May.
