Temperature Will Plunge 40 Degrees Overnight

It will feel like up to 20 below zero with the wind chill, the National Weather Service said.

It’s about to get cold again — really cold.

The temperature is going to drop about 40 degrees Monday, falling to an overnight low of about 3 throughout the region before the wind chill is factored in.

A wind chill advisory is in effect for Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Lehigh, Montgomery, Northampton and Philadelphia counties, and will remain in place until 6 a.m. Wednesday, the National Weather Service said.

It will feel like up to 20 degrees below zero with the wind chill, the NWS said.

“This wind chill advisory means that the combination of very cold air and strong winds will create dangerously low wind chill values. Limit your time out of doors if possible,” the NWS said in a statement.

Prolonged exposure to the wind and cold can lead to hypothermia and frostbite, the NWS warned.

The extreme temperature drop and associated ice may cause dangerous road conditions for Monday evening and Tuesday morning commutes. The NWS warned that many chemicals used to inhibit ice on roadways lose their effectiveness at extremely low temperatures.

The predicted temperatures stand to be record lows; the lowest temperature ever recorded in Philadelphia on Jan. 7 was 7 degrees, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported.

The strong winds have already caused problems in the area. Philadelphia International Airport grounded all flights Monday morning because winds were too strong, the Inquirer said.

Wind gusts were reaching 35 mph Monday, the NWS said, and could reach 40 mph Tuesday.
