FreshDirect Donates to Cheltenham Pantry

The online grocer made a donation to three local pantries through Philabundance, including one in Cheltenham.

FreshDirect, an online grocer based in the greater New York City area, made a $3,000 donation today to Philadbundance at the Berachah Church Food Cupboard in Elkins Park. Philabundance, the region’s largest foodbank, then donated $1,000 to the Berachah Church Food Cupboard; the Seeds of Hope Food Pantry at Chelten Baptist Church in Dresher; and Catholic Social Service of Montgomery County in Norristown.

The 10-year-old FreshDirect expanded to the Philadelphia market in October, and expanded to the Philadelphia suburbs in January, according to its general manager Paul Madarieta.

“We did better than expected in Philadelphia, so it was easier to expand to the suburbs,” Madarieta said. “We believe in giving back, so we’ve been partnered up with Philabundance since day one — we’re thrilled that we can help these pantries that give so much to the community.”

Philabundance chose the three pantries because they fall in the FreshDirect coverage area and because they go “above and beyond” for their respective communities.

FreshDirect has donated over 18,000 meals to Philabundance since they partnered up; the online grocer has also donated more than 16,000 pounds of food to the organization, which would have been otherwise thrown away.
