The event is in its 29th installment.

Abington Township, in conjunction with Abington School District, held its 29th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Service Monday afternoon at the high school auditorium.

The theme for the afternoon was education, and six educators were honored for their respective roles in bettering the community through teaching. They were:

  • Abington Commissioner Lawrence Jones
  • Mitchell Lee
  • Frank Redmond
  • Anthony Shelton Sr.
  • Mark Wilkerson and
  • Bernard Richardson.
Jones, Lee and Redmond are Abington Senior High School alumni, and Shelton is a longtime art teacher in the district.

The event also featured music by Abington School District students, as well as students from Wee R the World Early Learning Center, Family of Worship and Many Thoughts to Music.

State Reps. Brendan Boyle and Madeleine Dean spoke to the audience, as did Montgomery County Commissioner Chairman Josh Shapiro.
