26 volunteers worked many hours to make the event possible. A 4 lane aluminum track was used with computerized programming and timing to the ten thousandth of a second. The race is a model car race of the "Soap Box Derby" using a hill & gravity to propel the cars onto a level run to the finish line where momentum overcomes mechanical and air friction to propel them to the finish line. The cars were hand crafted by the boys, from blocks of pine wood, nail axles, and plastic wheels. The first Pinewood Derby was held in California in 1953.
