Montco Could Become the Hotbed for 2014 Governor Race

Two politicians from the county may face-off in a race for the state's seat.

Of course, nothing is set in stone just yet, but with phrases like "80 percent sure" and "pragmatism and practicality" being floated around, it is possible that Montgomery County may be home to a hot race in the 2014 Pennsylvania governor's race. Montgomery County Commissioner Bruce Castor has not put a percentage on his desire to enter the race, but has said he is keeping a close eye on the current governor, Tom Corbett's actions in the second half of his term. "I'm not going to run just to make a splash. I want Pennsylvania to go down the right path," Castor said in an interview with Pennsylvania Cable Network, covered by Patch in January. "I want Pennsylvania to be a conservative state, but with pragmatism and practicality. I don't see …

Castor: I Want 'Pragmatism' and 'Practicality' for Pa.

Castor said he began considering a run for governor after the fall elections. He says his campaign against Corbett would not be a 'grudge match.'

Bruce Castor, the minority Republican member of the Montgomery County Board of Commissioners, started "sticking his toe" in the waters of the 2014 race for Pennsylvania governor after the fall elections. "Now," Castor said in a video interview with Pennsylvania Cable Network, "it's more up to the ankles." Castor said he saw the defeat of a slate of candidates who he said were largely selected by Corbett as a referendum on the Governor's platform. "The Governor has expended his political capital, but not on the things that we care about or the things that he campaigned on," Castor said, citing pension reform, property tax reform, and right-to-work legislation as examples. Castor said the national economic recovery has proceeded "three times…

There's a common saying that many have used to point out why the right wing tends to outmaneuver and defeat the left wing-Leftists look for traitors, while conservatives look for converts. All this talk of RINO's gives me the impression that elements within the right wing of the US is looking for traitors more than converts at the current moment.   more ›

Report: Castor To Run for Governor?

Previously ran against Corbett in 2004 Pa. Attorney General primary

Montgomery County Commissioner Bruce Castor could challenge Pa. Governor Tom Corbett in 2014, PoliticsPA reports. The 51-year-old former district attorney and Lower Salford resident is the minority Republican on the county's 3-person executive and legislative board, alongside Democrats Josh Shapiro and Leslie Richards. Castor told the political news website that he believes Corbett is "vulnerable" to a reelection challenge. Corbett and Castor have a storied history, including a 2004 Republican primary race for Attorney General. The Republican State Committee endorsed Corbett for the post and Castor ran a grassroots campaign throughout the state, losing the nomination by five points. Castor has served on the Board of Commissioners since …

Does anyone know if either Castor or Shapiro attended the big Pennsylvania Society event at the Waldorf in NYC this weekend? That could be an indicator of any intentions to run for Pennsylvania governor.   more ›

County Voters Return Most Pols to Washington, Harrisburg

For the most part, Montgomery County voters kept Congressional and State Legislative incumbents in their jobs.

It was a big night for Democrats in Pennsylvania on Tuesday, prompting what County Commissioner Josh Shapiro termed a "jubilant" mood at the party's county headquarters in Plymouth Meeting, but most Montgomery County Republicans who were bidding to keep their jobs on Tuesday did so successfully. Incumbents sweep Congressional races The county's delegation to the U.S. House of Representatives will remain intact as incumbents easily swept their Congressional Races. Republican Jim Gerlach easily beat back a 6th District challenge from Manan Trivedi, who lost to Gerlach for the second time, while Pat Meehan enjoyed a similarly convincing win over Democratic challenger George Badey in the 7th District. Mike Fitzpatrick had a still easier time …

Or, maybe there are lies that the Republicans have swallowed? How many people do you think voted for Romney because they think Obama does not have a real birth certificate? How many voted for Romney because they think Obama is a Muslim? Or an aethist? Or all three (technically impossible, but they don't know that)?   more ›

U.S. Rep. Schwartz Wins Big over Challenger Rooney

Takes election by nearly two-to-one margin.

U.S. Representative Allyson Schwartz D-13 won a fifth term Tuesday night, defeating Republican challenger Joe Rooney soundly by garnering 69 percent of the vote to Rooney's 31 percent, state results show. "Tonight is a great victory for the state, we're seeing even more blue than people expected. We're going to hold republicans accountable, we're going to win the country and keep going forward," said Schwartz at a Philadelphia Obama Victory Party at the Warwick Hotel. Seen as a rising star in the Democratic party, Schwartz also spoke on stage at the Democratic National Convention in September. Challenger Rooney attempted to paint Schwartz as someone who had neglected her district in pursuit of loftier goals. However, the message didn't …

County Dems Celebrate Big Night at Plymouth Meeting Watch Party

Democrats win big from Montgomery County to the White House.

"Jubilant." That was the first word from Montgomery County Commissioner Josh Shapiro when asked about the mood at the Montgomery County Democratic Committee watch party Tuesday night. "A lot of people really worked hard and it was a boots on the ground effort," Shapiro said, the sounds of cheers surrounding him in the basement of UFCW Local 1776 in Plymouth Meeting. "It paid off with another big win for the President in Montgomery County and in Pennsylvania." The Democrats certainly had plenty to celebrate, as they fared well at the county, state, and national levels. Locally, favored incumbents like state senator Daylin Leach (D-7) and congresswoman Allyson Schwartz (D-13) easily downed their Republican challengers and newcomers such as …

Barack Obama Re-Elected President

President Obama defeats Republican Mitt Romney in the 2012 presidential election.

President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden were re-elected Tuesday night, defeating Republican challenger Mitt Romney and his vice presidential running mate, U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan. NBC News called the presidential election for Obama around 11:15 EST. The president sent a message on Twitter at 10:14 saying simply, "This happened because of you. Thank you." The Obama campaign won the most expensive presidential race ever, with both parties raising about $2.6 billion. The race was filled with negative campaigning on both sides, from Obama attacking Romney’s business experience with Bain Capital to Romney lambasting Obama’s handling of the economy. The race tightened during the final months of the campaign, with gaffes and surges from …
