Dean Sworn In

Madeleine Dean takes her seat as State Representative for the 153rd District.

Abington Commissioner Madeleine Dean was sworn in as State Rep., D-153, last week at the Capitol in Harrisburg.  Dean defeated Republican candidate Nick Mattiacci in the special election in April to fill the term vacated by now-Montgomery County Commissioner Josh Shapiro.   Dean talked about her new role at the end of the May 10 Abington Board of Commissioners meeting. “I had the really great honor and privilege this [May 8] to be sworn in as your newest state representative,” Dean said. “And so, I wanted to just tell you that my heart is very full. I find it to be an extraordinary honor to be serving Abington and Upper Dublin. I want to thank my colleagues here on the board, across the aisle. You were very encouraging to me [and] you …

Dean Defeats Mattiacci

It’s now Abington Commissioner and State Representative-elect Madeleine Dean.

It was a lively scene at Abington Commissioner Madeleine Dean’s house after the polls closed last night. She called it a “cast party.” Area Democrats gathered to celebrate her victory over Republican Nick Mattiacci in the special election for the unexpired term of former State Representative, now Montgomery County Commissioner, Josh Shapiro. Mattiacci conceded at 9:30 p.m. at the North Penn VFW. The term is up for election in November; both Dean and Mattiacci will likely throw their respective hats into the ring for the rematch.  To see video, click on the video section here. Dean, the newly-minted commissioner of Ward 7, is coming off her second political victory in five months; that means she only had about 90 days to throw together a …

As Expected, Romney Carries Pennsylvania

Casey, Kane shrug off primary challenges; Montgomery County results.

Former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney had little trouble winning the Pennsylvania Republican primary for President of the United States, with his closest competition coming from a man who no longer is in the race.  Romney finished with 57 percent of the vote, followed by former Sen. Rick Santorum at 19 percent. Santorum withdrew from the race earlier this month. Texas congressman Ron Paul finished third with 13 percent, and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich was last with 11 percent of the vote.  Montgomery County Republicans gave Romney a more emphatic nod than the rest of the state, awarding him about 67 percent of the vote. Santorum captured about 13 percent of the county vote, which still gave him 44 more votes than libertarian …

Republicans at the VFW

Update: Mattiacci concedes

Latest update 9:31 p.m. Republican supporters, along with a surprising number of younger volunteers, started to fill the North Penn VFW at about 8 p.m.    Mattiacci, prior to conceding at about 9:30 p.m. called his campaign "tough," but said he felt he rejuvenated the Republicans. He added, “[Madeleine Dean] will serve our district well until November … when I get in there."  Addressing the crowd, he said, "In typical Italian fashion, we came awfully close," and then compared his campaign to the movie “Rocky.” “’Rocky II’ happens in November," Mattiacci continued. "We're going to work hard during the summer and then take it in November.” The crowd chanted, "Nick!, Nick!, Nick!" Bob Adshead, chairman of the Abington Township Republican …

The US' Austerity in Charts -- Or, "Where is the Government Takeover Again?" http://bonddad.blogspot.com/2012/04/us-austerity-in-charts-or-where-is.html A big reason for the high unemployment rate is the cut in government jobs, especially at the state and local level. As Krugman notes: If public employment had grown the way it did under Bush, we’d have 1.3 million more government workers, and …   more ›

Abington Votes

Voting machine glitch at Abington Library resolved, Dean and Mattiacci vote

Turnout was light to about average at the polls at Abington Library at about 10 a.m. There was one glitch, though. According to Dottie Morse, a member of the Montgomery County Republican Committee, there was a problem with one of the Republican voting booths. A county official came to repair the problem — apparently the “hearing impaired” function was being activated accidentally. Still, Morse said seven Republican voters had to be turned away; one returned, though. All of the voting machines appeared to be working properly at about 11 a.m. Democratic candidate for the 153rd legislative district Madeleine Dean voted with her husband.  Prior to voting, she said felt energized, and added that she has great people working with her. She called…

Letter to the Editor: Tired of the Mattiacci Campaign

.

To the editor: I have about had it with the lies and misconceptions that are happening here in Abington and Upper Dublin surrounding the 153rd State Rep race. I really don’t go on attack often, but I feel I have to here. First of all, there was a “letter to the editor” (click here) posted on Abington Patch and Upper Dublin Patch and other publications, written from the point of view of a person who hadn’t made up their mind about the candidates until attending a speaking event, and then went on to write about how he found Nick Mattiacci to be a “breath of fresh air” and the stronger candidate. But, it turns out, he was a paid campaign worker (listed as paid thousands of dollars on the public records of the campaign finance report). This …

Clinton’s Montco Visit Attracts Hundreds

Addressing an audience of over 500, President Bill Clinton discusses his endorsement of state attorney general candidate Kathleen Kane.

By 5:15 p.m. Thursday afternoon, Warren Rosen and his wife Carol had been patiently waiting in line for a little over a half-an-hour. Standing in the Upper Moreland High School parking lot, the Rosens marked the halfway point in a line easily hundreds of people thick – and quickly growing by the minute. The couple, who travelled from Rydal, were waiting to attend a “Get Out the Vote” rally in support of Democratic state attorney general candidate Kathleen Kane. Neither was shy in expressing his or her excitement over seeing the rally’s special guest speaker: former President Bill Clinton. “He’s a great man, why wouldn’t we want to come see a great man?” Warren Rosen asked. “He’s always entertaining, and it’s enjoyable listing to him give a…

President Clinton Stumps in Upper Moreland

Former President Clinton will attend a ‘Get Out the Vote’ Rally at the high school in support of State Attorney General Candidate Kathleen Kane.

In support of veteran prosecutor and Democratic State Attorney General candidate Kathleen Kane, President Bill Clinton will attend a major “Get Out the Vote” Rally, this Thursday, April 12, from 6 – 8 p.m. at Upper Moreland High School. According to a recent press release on the visit, the rally follows President Clinton’s recent endorsement of Kathleen Kane as Pennsylvania’s first elected female Attorney General. “Kathleen Kane is the most experienced and qualified candidate to serve as Pennsylvania Attorney General,” President Clinton said in the release. “I am confident that Kathleen will use the legal system to protect and advance the lives of all Pennsylvanians. She is smart, tough and experienced, and she will make a great Attorney…

The League Hosts Dean and Mattiacci

Madeleine Dean and Nick Mattiacci faced off for the 153rd district at the township building on Tuesday night.

Abington Commissioner Madeleine Dean and attorney Nick Mattiacci met for another debate Tuesday night at the Abington Township Building. Both are vying for the state representative seat vacated by Josh Shapiro in the 153rd legislative district. The event, hosted by the Abington-Cheltenham-Jenkintown League of Women Voters, a nonpartisan civic organization, touched on a few local issues as well as some national, hot-button topics. Dean started off by saying she was a “52-year-old mother, lawyer, former small business owner and teacher at LaSalle University.” She said she has a deep belief in public service and said she has “what I think are life skills” that will help her contribute. In a cheeky fashion, she said she’s interested in …

Notwithstanding the swipe against the former Alaska Governor [whose FNC special on energy-issues, last night, was superb], it is my understanding that the D-party would appoint her replacement [until the term expires] were she to go to Harrisburg [and not as "a U.S. Rep"].   more ›
