Timber Wood Fired Grill suffers the same fate as The Inn Flight ... but with a much shorter run.
Timber Wood Fired Grill, in the corner of Old York and Woodland roads, appears to have closed permanently — at least that's what the makeshift printer-paper signs on the doors say. Timber, which opened only in July 2010, replaced the aging Inn Flight Restaurant. An earlier Abington Patch review said the food was good, but a bit pricey. Another Abington Patch article said that Timber's cuisine and philosophy were completely different than the restaurant it replaced. From the March 15, 2011 article: Delivering a full, diverse menu with consistent quality hasn’t been a challenge at all for Timber Wood, [Manager and business partner Michael] Dombkoski said. Instead, it’s been letting Abington residents and visitors know that the new …

Shapiro, Richards join business and nonprofit leaders in call to restore health and human services funding to state budget.
Montgomery County Commissioners Josh Shapiro and Leslie Richards joined State Rep. Matt Bradford, D-70, and nonprofit and business representatives on the steps of the Montgomery County Courthouse in Norristown on Thursday to denounce cuts to health and human services in the proposed Pennsylvania state budget for 2012-13. Referencing the recent controversy over Gov. Tom Corbett's statement that Pennsylvania women who didn't want to see a pre-abortion ultrasound should "close their eyes," Shapiro claimed that Corbett had "closed his eyes" to the plight of "the most vulnerable [people] in Pennsylvania." "We're here to say to Governor Corbett and our friends in the legislature, open your eyes to the reality of what a 20 percent cut to human …

Allows business to take 10 percent credit on new payroll for one year
U.S. Senator Bob Casey (D-PA) spent part of Wednesday plugging a Democrat-sponsored small business tax relief bill that he says would save Montgomery County businesses more than $6,200 for each new worker they hired during the year that followed that bill's passage into law. The bill would give businesses in the county a tax credit equivalent to 10 percent of any payroll they added over their 2011 payroll figures. The bill in question is the Small Business Jobs and Tax Relief Act of 2012 (S. 2237). The bill's co-sponsor, Sen. Charles Schumer, last week called the bill "one of the most bang-for-the-buck tax breaks we can give." A competing bill introduced by House Republicans would instead allow small businesses, defined by that bill as …

A malfunctioning battery cable cover in the trunk could cause a problem, but the fix is free.
BMW said on Monday that it is recalling all BMW 5 and 6 Series models of the previous generation built between 2003 and 2010. According to the press release, “In some remote cases, the battery cable cover inside the boot of these vehicles may be incorrectly mounted." The problem could result in the electrical system malfunctioning, the vehicle failing to start and, in some cases, charring or fire, the press release continued. Customers will be notified in writing. The repair is free and takes about 30 minutes. The recall includes the E60 and E61 5 Series, and the E63 and E64 6 Series. About 1.3 million cars worldwide are affected. According to CNN, this equates to about 367,000 cars in the U.S. There have been no accidents or injuries as…

Spokesman: Customers gave ‘overwhelmingly negative’ feedback regarding the lean beef.
Giant Food Stores said today that it will no longer purchase and sell fresh “finely textured ground beef.” The reason? Customers hate it, and they expressed it by telling store managers, calling the Giant consumer affairs department and via Facebook. “More than 100 customers expressed concerns over finely textured ground beef; we of course listen and have a good relationship with our customers,” Giant Food Stores spokesman Christopher Brand said today. “The feedback has been overwhelmingly negative. “I will tell you that we have a very educated consumer," he continued. "It’s not something that they wanted to purchase.” According to Brand, finely textured ground beef is 100-percent lean beef manufactured by harvesting lean tissue that is …

The federal government is expected to accept the plan within two years, with land transfer expected in three years.
A new future for shuttered Willow Grove air base was drafted Wednesday afternoon with the Horsham Land Reuse Authority’s approval of its long-awaited redevelopment plan. The culmination of six years of work on behalf of the nine-member board, the public in terms of comments and, for the last year, the HLRA’s consultant, RKG Associates, the sixth version of a massive mixed use redevelopment plan for 862 acres of the 1,100-acre property will now be forwarded onto the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. “I think this vote really needs a drum roll,” HLRA board member and former Warminster Township Supervisor Donnamarie Davis said moments before a vote was taken. “If anybody thinks there hasn’t been enough time and effort put …

The redevelopment blueprint is due to the federal government by March 31.
Wednesday marks the culmination of six years of work as the Horsham Land Reuse Authority is poised to finally adopt a redevelopment plan for 862 acres of Willow Grove air base. And, unlike other meetings, which drew hundreds opposing an airport, the 3 p.m. last hurrah of sorts, is expected to pass with little fanfare. HLRA Executive Director Mike McGee said the board received “very few” comments during the month-long public comment period that precedes this week’s meeting. While plan tweaks and, in some cases, acreage reconfigurations had been fairly common throughout the process of late, McGee said he expects the only adjustment to be a change in location for the Bucks County Housing Group’s planned homeless housing. Instead of being …

Which bar won the weekly poll?
It looks like there’s some love for the Drake. Drake Tavern, on Old York Road in Jenkintown, won this week’s Patch Readers’ Choice Poll for best place to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day/grab a green beer. The bar took 45 percent of the vote; the runner up was Keswick Tavern, which garnered 26 percent of the vote. Hopefully there will be some nice weather on Saturday so people can take advantage of that outside bar area. Congratulations to the Drake. -- Next week we’ll be looking for the best park in Abington.

It was in the tradition of the Moshalu (same owners). Same quality but a bit pricey for Abington for daily dining. Sorry to see them close.   more ›
