Updated: Wayne Luker Wins Ward 5 Primary

Updated with comments from Democrats.

Abington Commissioner Wayne Luker defeated challenger Donna Brewer by about 100 votes Tuesday night—312 to 213.

All results are unofficial until the election is certified by the Montgomery County Board of Elections. Once certified, the official election results will include all write-in votes, provisional ballots, and military and overseas absentee ballots

A Republican, entering the North Penn VFW, said at about 8 p.m., “I’m really here to see if anything happened to Wayne [Luker]. It’d be a shame to see him go.”

"I'm happy tonight because my buddy won tonight—Wayne Luker ... he's a Democrat," Abington Commissioner Peggy Myers was overheard saying.

"I was extremely pleased to hear that Wayne Luker won his primary. I respect him as a commissioner and as a human being," Republican Robert Wachter said.

Wachter said that he was likely challenged because of his opposition to the Roslyn Library expansion, and his opposition of a failed anti-discrimination ordinance.

Over at Vintage, where the Democrats were gathering ...

Luker entered the bar at about 9:30 p.m., and he said one word: "relieved."

Luker said that he spoke to his opponent and that there is no animosity between them. He did say that he was surprised that he was challenged, and added that he had never been challenged in a primary.

Greg Holt, former chairman of the ARDC and Luker's campaign manager, also said that he was surprised Luker, the board of commissioners' longest serving member, was challenged.

Holt said that there were rumors about Luker not running this year.

"Wayne's a laid-back guy, and he accepted his win graciously," Holt said.
