Video: Mattiacci Concedes to Dean in the 153rd

Republican challenger Nick Mattiacci lost his bid for the 153rd district last night. 

Mattiacci, an attorney from Elkins Park, lost to Democratic State Representative and former Abington Commissioner Madeleine Dean by about 10,000 votes. 

The total vote count according to the county website:

• Dean: 21,113
• Mattiacci: 11,411
• Libertarian Ken Krawchuk: 322

Mattiacci spoke to the Republican crowd at the North Penn VFW on Jenkintown Road in Glenside at about 9:45 p.m.; he received an ovation when he walked in the door at 9 p.m.

Mattiacci thanked his family, his volunteers, several Abington Commissioners and longtime Abington Republican Jon Fox for helping him get his foot in the door … politically speaking. 

“We worked hard [but] the numbers don’t show it,” Mattiacci said.

He went on to congratulate Dean.

“They ran a strong campaign; obviously the people have spoken,” Mattiacci said. “I wish Madeleine Dean well. I know she represents the community well and I offer my support …”

Abington Township Rockledge Borough Republican Organization (ATRO) Chairman Bob Adshead said he was surprised the numbers were so skewed. 

“The numbers were a little unexpected — we thought it was going to be closer than that because in the special election [Dean] only won by 1,000 votes,” Adshead said. “This is obviously 2 to 1.”

Adshead said Dean’s numbers in Abington mirrored those of newly-re-elected President Barack Obama. 

Obama garnered 56 percent of the vote in Montgomery County according to the county's election website.

“It was a national election with a huge turnout,” he said. “Obviously, if you look at Obama’s percentage, it’s identical to Dean’s percentage, in Abington anyway.  It’s back to the drawing board — we’re never giving up.”
