Shapiro: Turnout is higher-than-average, steady

Democratic candidate for Montgomery County Commissioner Josh Shapiro stood in lobby of the with his daughter, Sophia, earlier this morning. He was looking out the glass doors, waiting to greet voters and waiting for the rest of his family to arrive so he could vote.

“Sophia got up early so she could hang with me before going to school,” Shapiro said.

Shapiro arrived at the polling place at 7 a.m.; he called voter turnout “steady.”

“Turnout is a bit higher than typical for your odd-year election, and we’re encouraged by that,” he said.

The candidate said he stopped reading and watching news about the election a couple weeks ago; he looked somewhat relaxed.

“We’re confident with our record and we’re confident with our campaign,” Shapiro said. “We’re not interested in how it’s being filtered by the other side, and we think the voters are going to respond well to our message.”

Shapiro said that his children are excited about Election Day. Sophia, who was wearing a Shapiro/Richards sticker on her jacket, said emphatically that she has seen all of her father’s TV ads.

Shapiro said that his son, Jonah, 6, has been asking him every day, “How many days are left until the election?”
