PennDOT Encourages Safe Driving for Super Bowl Sunday

There were 217 crashes on Super Bowl Sunday last year; 12 percent were alcohol related.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, with the Pennsylvania DUI Association, the Pennsylvania State Police, Abington Police and Jenkintown police held an event at the Whole Foods store in Jenkintown on Friday discouraging impaired driving on Super Bowl Sunday.

The participants discussed regional DUI patrols for Super Bowl Sunday, and provided Super Bowl party-hosting tips to prevent their guests from drinking and driving.

The Pennsylvania DUI Association’s DUI Victims’ Moving Memorial was also on display to honor and remember those who lost their lives because of impaired drivers.

According to PennDOT statistics, there were 217 crashes in Pennsylvania during last year’s Super Bowl, which resulted in three deaths. Of those crashes, 25 were alcohol-related.

The enforcement effort will be supported by part of the $4.2 million in federal funds PennDOT distributes statewide, which come from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The funds are used for police overtime and equipment.
