Jenkintown Woman Charged in Boardwalk Crash

Overturned Honda Civic on beach while using headlights to search for lost cell phone

A Jenkintown woman has been charged in an incident in Ocean City last week in which an allegedly intoxicated Philadelphia man crashed his Honda Civic through a boardwalk railing and overturned the car on the beach.

Hyeyeon Ju, 46, is charged with allowing an intoxicated person to drive, hindering apprehension and open container of alcohol in a vehicle.

Ju and Christian M. Winzcuk, 21, of Philadelphia, had been walking on the beach last Tuesday evening when they lost a cell phone, according to a preliminary police investigation. The suspects then drove the car onto the boardwalk in an attempt to use the headlights to help search for the phone, Ocean City Police Capt. Steven Ang said in a statement.

When Winzcuk attempted to drive the vehicle off the Boardwalk at 22nd Street, he lost control and crashed onto the beach, taking out about 25 feet of railing in the process, Ang said. The car landed on its side. Some boardwalk decking was also damaged in the crash.

Winzcuk was charged with driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, motor vehicle on boardwalk, open container of alcohol in vehicle, hindering apprehension and falsely incriminating another, according to Ang.
