UPDATED: Giant Gets Genuardi’s

The Carlisle-based store company picks up 16 Genuardi's stores, including two in Abington.

Giant Food Stores entered into an agreement to purchase 16 Philadelphia-area Genuardi’s stores for $106 million.

Included in those 16 stores are the Genuardi’s in Roslyn and the Genuardi’s in Huntingdon Valley.

Giant, a Carlisle, Pa.-based company, said it plans on converting the 16 Genuardi’s stores to Giant stores. Genuardi's is a subsidiary of Safeway, Inc. Safeway acquired the Genuardi's stores and name in 2001.

According to Giant Public Relations Manager Chris Brand, the conversion will take place over a three-week period in which there will be a staggered closing of the stores.

“Of course the agreement is subject to regulatory approval, it’s hard to say, but in the middle of this year, if we receive regulatory approval, we will move forward with the conversion over a three-week period,” Brand said. “Our plan is to take maybe five [stores] in the first week, and close them, and convert them from Genuardi’s, then five the next week …”

Brand said the average footprint of the Genuardi’s stores to be acquired is 50,000 square feet; he added that Giant will sink millions of dollars into the stores to upgrade them.

None is in danger of being closed, Brand said.

There are about 1,800 employees working at the 16 Genuardi’s stores in the purchase agreement. Brand said that they will go through an application process.

“There is a process in place for Genuardi’s associates to apply for [Giant] positions,” Brand said. “And we’re certainly encouraging all employees to do so.”

Giant recently closed its store on Old York Road in Abington, effectively telling its customers to shop at its Willow Grove store up the road.

Currently, there are about 40 Giant stores in the Philadelphia area; 13 of those stores are in Montgomery County.

Brand said the purchase of these 16 Genuardi’s stores would bring the total number of Giant stores to 199, operating in four states.

The sale will likely be completed by mid-2012.

Hopefully this sale will go through so that we the consumer will see prices fall as there is a vast difference between the two Stores in terms of prices. Many of the price differences are substantial.

I love it. I live down the street from the Genuardi's in Roslyn and usually go to Giant in Willow Grove because Genuardi's is so overpriced.

This is horrible. I hate Giant. There is a reason Genaurdi's prices are higher.....it's called quality and service. Now I'm stuck with the lowly stores of Giant, Acme, Pathmark and ShopRite unless I go to the extreme of Whole Foods. There is nothing inbetween.

I have no idea why anyone would say the newer Giant stores lack quality or service. If you have shopped at the Willow Grove Giant you already know they have an excellent food court, cooking classes, valet grocery pick-up, excellent produce. Everyone is friendly and helpful. They have even added a gas station with discounted gas for customers of the store. The national brands are the same from store chain to store chain. They difference is price and Genuardis is as much as 40% higher for some products. I have never found an item (other than a featured product on sale) that is less at Genuardis. They are even higher on things like flour, sugar, salt and rice. The change will be a tremendous boost the the Roslyn area.

There is absolutely no reason why there should be a substantial price difference between a Nationally Recognized Brand which is prepackaged and requires no service etc, It appears to be corporate greed. I was informed by the management at GIANT That SafeWay prices should be lower since they have a greater buying power which should result in a lower wholesale price.

I have no idea what Shop-Rite you have have been using, but everyone I have ever been in was disorganized, dirty and rarely cheaper than Giant on the food items I buy. I realize that they are technically privately owned, but so are most 7-11 stores. The reality is that the corporation that owns the Shop-Rite name essentially sets the prices and the items they carry. They are about the same or higher price on national brands. Many of the store brands are on par with Sav-A-Lot and similar discount off-brand label stores. Just my opinion and I still am anxious for the Genuardis in Roslyn to switch over.
