Five-Day-a-Week Trash Coming to Abington
Forget that Monday morning walk with the gray bin ...
Abington Public Works Director Ed Micciolo said in a presentation this week that the township will likely be heading toward trash pickup five days a week.
Micciolo, giving a presentation at the public works committee meeting, said having trash picked up every weekday rather than four times a week will be more efficient, reducing daily collection routes.
The changeover would happen April 15.
Right now, every resident puts his or her paper waste — the gray bin — out on Monday and has his or her trash and recyclables out on the neighborhood’s designated trash day.
Under the new plan, residents would have trash, paper, recyclables and yard waste picked up on the same day — their neighborhood’s designated trash day.
Different trucks would pick up each bin, and those trucks would come at different times in the day. Some residents’ trash days would change; Micciolo said the public works department will send out letters and put hangers on trash bins about two weeks prior to the change, letting residents know when to take out their trash.
Micciolo said some residents become irritated when there are back-to-back Monday holidays — meaning paper isn’t picked up for three weeks. The new system would remedy that.
If a resident’s trash pickup falls on a holiday, the resident should put his or her trash out the following business day.

I get more aggravated when I have to call the waste disposal office every single week to pick up lawn bags that get ignored by the trucks that either don't come up my street or just don't care. There was a point last summer that for two straight months I had to call every single time to get something picked up when I got home & noticed it was still there. Hopefully this resolves that issue, but I don't have much faith in it...

oh I thought I was the only one. No its just called plain lazyness. I have seen it with my own eyes, those collectors dont care about their job because if they did they wouldnt miss a single can or bag.

It makes sense. Ed Micciolo's guys do good (often unappreciated) work. Once-a-week sounds like a good solution.

Was there any thought given to residents who can't fit 3 bins 3 feet apart on their curb?

Which is another problem on my block: The neighbors on one side of the street have to put their cans on the other side of the street because the trucks don't go up out street on both sides (and parking prevents the pickup anyway). I can't imagine having six cans in front of my house every Thursday, nor the room for it. They will have to have people get out of the trucks to move cans around.

^ I didn't think about the space problem. I could see how that would be a problem. However, the PW department says not to put out paper if the bin is only half full. It would help speed up the trash routes as well.

SImilar problem on my block on Edgehill . We have a hard time finding room for 2 bins between parked cars and driveways.

Two thoughts -
I pay for trash collection; it shouldn't matter whether my recycle bin is half full, three quarters full, or only has one piece of paper in it. I'm paying the same as everyone else, so they shouldn't tell me not to put it out.
Did the township think of maybe going to single stream recycling instead of having two separate bins for recycling? It would cut down on the number of trucks - saving on gas and the wear on the roads from the large trucks.

wow its amazing to see how long it took ed miccolo of township to figure out that their was a problem of this magnitude . how many years has it been since this trash schedule been in place? ed what does it cost to run those big diesel hydraulic lift trash trucks to pick up the trash, that is per hour /per day basis? maybe one day
the township will get out of the trash business , like other townships have done.
i still recall moving here years ago my trash was picked up twice a week , with no
fancy trash containers.

My yard waste and paper got skipped Monday first day of the switch. They are working on the road but its open before 9am and after 3pm.
