Community Meeting for North Hills, Crestmont Residents

The meeting tonight is in response to the July 17 murder in North Hills.

The North Penn VFW, at 2519 Jenkintown Road, Glenside, will host a community meeting tonight, Aug. 13 at 7 p.m.

The meeting is meant to help the residents of North Hills and Crestmont; Abington Commissioners Wayne Luker and Stephen Kalinoski developed the idea.

Luker, speaking at the end of the August board of commissioners meeting, referenced the July 17 murder of William Butler, which happened in the North Hills section of the township.

“This sad senseless event tragically affected two families, a host of relatives and friends, and impacted two proud communities in our township … [the community meeting] will be an attempt to not allow what happened to destroy our communities in Abington Township,” Luker said.

Luker's ward encompasses Crestmont and Kalinoski's ward includes North Hills. Kalinoski is also the general manager of the North Penn VFW.

The meeting will allow residents to discuss violence prevention ideas and will give residents the opportunity to meet local leaders.

"If we didn't do something, and something else happened ... shame on us," Kalinoski said.

This is the first of many important events and programs that have resulted from the efforts of a coalition of concerned citizens, community organizations, houses of worship and governmental agencies. The work of Tameka Jefferson and Shanna Huff as 2 of the important catalysts for the Prayer Vigil and the meeting are to be applauded. The event will not only allow citizens to meet their community officials but to learn about resources from many agencies and to voice their concerns. The attendance of community members is important to our continued future efforts. Come and get involved. The question being asked is "What piece of the puzzle do you hold?"
