'Art Goes' to the Meadowbrook School

The Wissahickon School District helps 'Art Go to School.'

At The Meadowbrook School, grades first through sixth enjoyed mini art history lessons made possible through the Wissahickon School District’s Chapter of “Art Goes to School.” Denise Felsenstein (mother of Devon ’18) and Heather Knopf Reeves (mother of Liam ’16 and Lucas ’18) served as volunteers on April 10 and 11 to enhance the existing art program.

During their visit they brought poster-sized prints of famous art work and explained about art history, famous artists, types of art, art periods, social context, and how to critically view artwork. Discussions with the Meadowbrook children were conducted in a lively, interactive way that encouraged critical thinking and imagination with the students, who were eager participants.

Specific artists and works discussed included: Charles Demuth and “Figure 5 in Gold,” Robert Indiana and “The American Dream,” Bartolome Esteban Murillo and “Girl and her Duenna,” Edgar Degas and “Two Dancers on Stage,” Roy Lichtenstein and “Stepping Out,” and Charles Alston and “Family No 1.” The students also learned about Impressionism, Cubism, Abstract Expressionism, Spanish Baroque, Harlem Renaissance, American Pop Art, Surrealism, and Signscape. Finally, to reinforce the art history lessons, students were encouraged to demonstrate their own understanding of art by creating works of art and sharing them with the class.
