Anything With a Plug — Today in Abington

Abington is holding a recycling event for old electronics.

Do you have a Betamax player that you've tried unsuccessfully to sell on eBay? Is there an almost-working Atari 2600 in your basement taking up space? Are people making fun of your "bag phone?"

Well, get rid of them.

Abington is offering its “Anything with a Plug” recycling day … today from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Abington Public Works Facility at 2201 Florey Lane.

The event gives residents the opportunity to responsibly recycle old, obsolete electronics for free.

Electronics will be recycled by eForce Compliance, a certified and secured recycling organization out of Philadelphia. All data  media will be destroyed or wiped clean.

The next electronics recycling event will be Nov. 10.

So, did you, or are you going to let go of your Walkman today? What about your Compaq computer? How about recycling that old Apple Newton? Can you think of any other comically obsolete electronics? Tell us in the comments.

Today's collection was another huge success! We were there at 11:45 along with plenty of other cars, and those eForce guys had our jam-packed trunk emptied in about 90 seconds. Goodbye, Macintosh Performa 5200 from, like, 1995. So long, thrice-broken fax machine. Fare thee well, dust-encrusted collection of junkyard-salvaged power tools given to us by my wonderful and well-meaning father-in-law. And 1985 Panasonic boom box, I'll never forget you. (But despite the protestations of my wife, I'm keeping my STILL-WORKING 1978 Betamax, thank you very much!)

After the eForce team emptied our trunk, I had a chance to say hi to Abington Township Public Works Director Ed Micciolo. Ed reminded me that April's Anything with a Plug recycling event collected more than 7000 pounds of material, and today's event looks to have collected at least 4500–5000 pounds, none of which will ever clog up a landfill. How awesome is that!

In just two weeks—Saturday, July 7, 9AM–noon—Abington Township is holding a free paper shredding event for Township residents (residential paper only, please, not commercial). And the third and final 2012 Anything with a Plug recycling event will take place on Saturday, November 10, also 9AM–noon. Both of these will take place at the same location, the Public Works Facility at 2201 Florey Lane. Please mark your calendars—or just check your Township calendar, which already has both events marked!
