Alleged Helzberg Diamonds Thief to be Brought to Montco This Week
The Hatboro man who allegedly stole a diamond ring March 14 is in custody in Baltimore County, MD.
The Hatboro man who allegedly stole a $5,500 ring from Helzberg Diamonds in Abington March 14 is in custody in Baltimore County, MD, and will likely be transported back to the area later this week, according to police.
Daniel Cairns, 37, of the unit block of Woodland Avenue, was arrested March 19 in Maryland following a traffic stop, according to Abington Detective Sgt. Mike Gallagher.
Through an investigation, Gallagher said police received information that Cairns was getting his vehicle, a 2006 Jeep, repaired at the C & C Ford Dealership in Horsham. Gallagher said that Cairns was likely stopped in Maryland because a police officer simply “ran the tag,” and Cairns’ arrest warrant popped up.
Gallagher said that Cairns is not being charged with a crime in Maryland.
Back home, though, Cairns will likely be charged with retail theft and receiving stolen property.
Abington Deputy Chief John Livingood said last week that Cairns allegedly asked a clerk to see a ring that was in the display case at Helzberg Diamonds on Moreland Avenue in Abington. Cairns then allegedly fled with the ring in a rented green 2010 Jeep.
According to Gallagher, the ring was located at a pawn shop, though he wouldn’t say which one.
“Through an investigation we discovered that [Cairns] went to a pawn shop,” Gallagher said. “And we took representatives from Helzberg to the pawn shop to identify the ring. They did—it was laser inscribed.
“We usually check places where people buy and sell gold,” Gallagher said. “The store’s owner was very cooperative.”
According to court documents, Cairns was arrested Nov. 6 by the Plymouth Township Police department for retail theft and for possession of a controlled substance. Cairns posted bail the same day, according to court documents.
He was formally arraigned March 9—five days before he allegedly stole the ring.
