Updated with Video: Abington is One of 100

Abington wins its fifth '100 Best Communities for Young People' award; it's the only community in Pennsylvania to land the award five times.

Five times and counting.

Early this afternoon, Abington was named one of the "100 Best Communities for Young People" by the America's Promise Alliance, the nation's largest partnership organization dedicated to improving the lives of children and youth.

The announcement was made in the school district administration building ... via Skype.

The Skype broadcast touched on each of the '100 Best' communities across the country; some had a live feed of their audiences, as Abington did.

The Abington audience comprised Abington School District and Township officials, teachers, Abington Police officers and some students. Abington Superintendent Amy Sichel made remarks to other audiences listening to the broadcast -- the host of the Skype broadcast said jokingly that Sichel should be used to making comments about winning the award by now.

Abington submitted a 30-page application to be eligible for the honor. It included, among other things, essays from Abington School District students.

Following the Skype broadcast, Sichel recognized school officials and township officials, as well as the Abington Police Department, the Abington YMCA and Abington Memorial Hospital.
