HIGHLAND ELEMENTARY TO HOLD 8TH ANNUAL MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. DAY OF SERVICE

Highland Elementary School will hold a day of service in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. on Thursday, January 17 from 4:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.  Faculty, students, and families of Highland Elementary will assemble care packages to benefit Cradles to Crayons. In conjunction, Highland families will participate in the 4th Annual Diversity Fair to celebrate various cultures.

For the past seven years, faculty, students, and families of Highland Elementary have endeavored to exemplify the dream and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by participating in a day of service at Highland Elementary  School.

On Wednesday, November 28, 2012, Highland Elementary launched a drive to collect donations for Cradles to Crayons. Students were responsible for and donated the following items: children’s coats sizes newborn-14/16, children’s clothing sizes newborn-14/16 including shorts, pants, skirts, t-shirts, long-sleeved shirts, tank tops, dresses, pajamas, new socks and underwear, and books, especially baby board books.  The items collected will be used to create care packages.

Faculty, students, and families of Highland will use these collected items to assemble the care packages on Thursday, January 17.

The collection is in support of Cradles to Crayons (www.cradlestocrayons.org) year-round program to provide these essential items to disadvantaged children, free of charge, by engaging and connecting communities that have with communities that need.

Highland families and faculty members will also participate in the 4th Annual Diversity Fair to celebrate various cultures. Different foods, music, and festive attire will be featured at various tables throughout the gym. Students ill travel around the gym earning stamps for their Highland Passports in order to earn a homework pass.

Highland expects to impact the lives of the children that are involved in this service project and diversity fair. While the measurable outcome of the project will be the number of care packages created by the team of volunteers,” said Dr. Marianne Kaemmer, school principal, “the immeasurable outcome will be the feeling of pride, community, and making a difference in the lives of others that this event will provide to all involved.”

Highland’s Annual Martin Luther King Day of Service is officially registered on the United Way’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service website.  The organization also provides all volunteers with t-shirts.  For more information regarding Highland’s Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service, contact LaVonda Daniels, Project Coordinator, at (215) 884-1048 x1109.
